The treatment of diseases and sickness is not only administrating of medicines but also ensuring quality, serene, healthy and friendly environment that patients, especially children, can enjoy during hospitalization, head of the Department of Child Health, Korle Bu Teaching Kospital (KBTH), Prof. Bamenla Goka has said.

"This is just what Vodafone Ghana Foundation has done to support and transform healthcare delivery at the Children's Cancer Unit of the Children's Block at KBTH into a modern world standardized child cancer treatment centre."

Prof. Goka made this observation in Accra on Monday when Vodafone Ghana Limited cut a tape to unveil the re-opening of the Children's Cancer Unit of the KBTH after committing huge sums of money to renovate it.

The renovation block, according to the new CEO of Vodafone Ghana Limited, Mr. Haris Broumidis would help medical practitioners to effectively care for children, suffering from various types of cancer, between the ages of three months to thirteen years.

Globally, an estimated 100,000 children suffer and die from cancer every year due to lack of diagnosis and basic treatment, according to worldchildcancer.org. Survival rates for children in high income countries about 80 percent while it stands at 10 per cent at low income countries.

The renovation took care of a study area where the children can be taught by teachers from Ghana Education Service (GES) to enable them catch up academic work while undergoing treatment.

"We want children to feel at home so we created a welcoming and non-threatening environment with child friendly facilities. The décor and murals are engaging and the bathroom facilities are also child friendly," he noted.

According to Mr. Broumidis, just like the Herbert Osei-Baidoo Ward, Vodafone would also pay for thorough cleaning of the facility every month to ensure the facility is infection-free and well maintained.

He said the phase one of project begun earlier this year when the adult Cancer Unit, Herbert Osei Baidoo Ward' was given a facelift to ensure patients undergo the best treatment.

He said Vodafone Ghana Foundation has also constructed a brand new chemotherapy suit with reclining armchairs, a new Cytotoxic room where pharmacists can mix and store toxic drugs, new washrooms and increased the number of beds for patients".

"We are passionate about empowering Ghanaians and have committed ourselves to improving quality healthcare delivery in every possible way. I am, particularly, proud of the work done here, because, these children are the future leaders of this country and need our support to achieve more with their lives," he said.

The Director of Administration, Nurudeem Mohommed thanked the Foundation on behalf of the KBTH Board for their effort in making the Ward a world class delivery Unit.
