Ghana: Group Warns Mahama Over DCE's Alleged Re-Nomination

Kumasi — Rumours that the Presidency is considering bringing the defeated District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kwabre East, Mr. Adams Iddisah, back, has angered a group of loyal supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the constituency.

Mr. Iddisah failed to secure the fifty percent votes that would have qualified him for second consideration, thereby ruling him out of the race, but reports are rife that President Mahama is considering a move to re-nominate him for the position.

Even though initial speculations that the ambition of Mr. Iddisah to assume a second term in office as the DCE for the area was virtually over, following his inability to sail through a few weeks ago, the group, which calls itself "NDC Scholars of Kwabre East", says they have information to the contrary.

The group alleged that it had been reliably informed that the Presidency was bent on bringing Mr. Iddisah for the consideration of the assembly members, a move which it claims, could be suicidal for the party and the general development of the Kwabre East District.

In a strong-worded letter under the headline "Attempts to Impose Iddisah on Us: Disaster in 2016", the group, claiming to have membership at the various tertiary institutions, said Mr. Iddisah was a liability for the ruling party, having been rejected twice on the party's platform.

The NDC Scholars indicated that the former DCE was rejected by the party delegates in the run up to the 2012 general elections when he contested the party primary, amid massaging of the delegates list skewed towards his interest, harassment of opponents and their support base.

They argued that the Presidency would be doing a great deal of disservice to the people of Kwabre East, and more especially, grassroots supporters of the NDC, if it goes ahead to present Mr. Iddisah, stressing that not only would it affect the development of the people in the district, but also affect the popularity of the ruling party a lot.

They have, therefore, threatened to resist, even if it means sacrificing their last drop of blood, any attempt to re-impose the former DCE on the people of Kwabre East.

"We assure the President that we know many hardworking and highly qualified NDC members who are better placed to be DCE for Kwabre East than Adams Iddisah. The failed DCE I, therefore, not only the wise man to lord over us, after messing up with the unmerited opportunity given him within the last four years, hence, we are more than ready to avail the list of these scholars for consideration to avoid further embarrassment," the group hinted.

The Scholars of Kwabre East, therefore, expressed the hope that the cry of the grassroots supporters of the Kwabre East NDC would be heard, and the necessary decision taken to avoid any further confrontation.
