Ghana: Land Agent Awaits Trial for Alleged Robbery

A land agent is awaiting trial at an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly robbing a herbalist and a security officer at gunpoint at Abease in Amasaman, a suburb of Accra.

Sheriff Yussif is said to have acted together with five others who intercepted the vehicle of the complainants at about 1:00 p.m., and at gun point, took their mobile phones.

One of Sherrif Yussif's accomplices is alleged to have been gunned down after there was an exchange of fire between them and the police patrol team.

The accused person who managed to escape from the scene was arrested upon a tipoff.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges of conspiracy to commit crime, contrary to section 23(1) and 149 of act 29/60, and robbery, contrary to section 149 of act 29/60, before the court presided over by Mr. Francis Obiri.

Sheriff Yussif has been remanded into custody to re-appear before the court on August 12, 2013.

The facts of the case are that on August 9, 2012, at about 1:00 p.m., the first complainant had visitors and decided to go out with them in his vehicle, together with the second and third complainant.

The Prosecutor, Superintendent Duuti Tuaruko, told the court on reaching a section of the road, between Opah and Abease, Sheriff Yussif and five others, armed with weapons, intercepted the complainant at gunpoint and collected their mobile phones.

He said they, as well, threatened the first complainant to give them GH¢10,000 or face the consequences, adding that in course of the incident, a witness telephoned and described the scene to the police for assistance.

Superintendent Tuaruko mentioned that the Amasaman Police patrol team got to the scene, and on seeing the police, Sheriff Yussif and his accomplices opened fire, compelling the police to return fire.

According to him, Sheriff Yussif sustained gunshot injuries but managed to escape, while one of them, by name Kwesi Akator alias Lion, died on the spot.

"On July 19, 2013, the accused was arrested at Amasaman," the prosecutor added.
