Somalia: Puntland Administration, Media Fraternity Agree On Draft Law

The Media Association of Puntland (MAP) and the Puntland regional Ministry of Information have reached an agreement on a second draft of a regional media law, Somalia's Garowe Online reported Monday (July 29th).

The Puntland Non-state Actors' Association brought the two sides together in an event attended by Information Minister Ahmed Sheikh Jama, Planning and International Relations Minister Mohamud Aideed Dirir, MAP Secretary General Burhan Ahmed Dahir, journalists and the heads of civil society organisations.

The second draft of the media law meets international standards for freedom of expression, Jama said. The draft law will now be referred to cabinet and parliament for approval, according to Dirir.

Dahir said media laws should guarantee separation between the federal government and the media sector, lambasting the draft media law being debated in the Somali federal parliament.
