Blantyre — Bullets Football Club have a reason to back up their claim that they are not called the people's team for nothing as they received the most short message service (SMS) in the TNM Sapota Mapeto promotion.
This was revealed on Tuesday at the first draw of the promotion where prizes were given to lucky subscribers.
In the promotion, subscribers text a team's code to 1515 and each text costs K30 of which K21 goes to the club.
In the first month 60,000 sms were sent by 5,000 people. These sms generated K1.1million revenue for the teams and Bullets as the first team, will get K560, 000.
The people's team got 26,933 sms followed by their archrivals, Wanderers Football Club who got 17,384.
Bullets General Secretary, Higger Mkandawire was all smiles when the Malawi News Agency (Mana) asked for a comment on the development.
"We are happy to have come up top. With the win from Carlsberg, it shows that Bullets fans do understand the importance of taking part in supporting the team. I urge them to continue texting and supporting the team," he said.
Mkandawire added: "We are grateful to TNM for the competition and I urge other companies to introduce such competitions that would help run the football clubs because it is the players that suffer most when teams are not doing well financially."
The former champions recently also won the Carlsberg 'Win for your team' promotion where they got K5 million as a prize.
Lucky subscribers won prizes that included t-shirts, radios, footballs, mobile phones and the top prize for the day was a 42 inch plasma screen.
