Blantyre — Malawians should utilize the two weeks set aside for registration by the Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) in the four districts where the exercise is underway as the electoral body has no plans to extend the period any further, Malawi News Agency (Mana) can reveal.
Mec director of Media and Public Relations, Sangwani Mwafulirwa told the Malawi News Agency (Mana) that the argument that the period is not enough does not hold water as the days equally correspond with the population in the constituencies earmarked for registration.
Asked whether the commission is contented with people's turn up at various registration centres, Mwafulirwa expressed satisfaction with progress of the exercise but bemoaned the tendency of other people who turn up late for registration.
"It makes our work difficult," he said adding, "People who patronize centers at around 3 or 4 O'clock mostly complain of inefficiencies," he lamented.
He cited an example of the Blantyre tax office as one of the centres that people are sent back home because of the time factor.
"We are not going to extend the registration period as the allocated time is enough to cater for all eligible voters," said Mwafulirwa.
Asked whether the registration exercise which extends into the school calendar in September onward will not disrupt classes when schools open, Mwafulirwa ruled out such incidences observing that the registration centers will be strategically placed to avoid such scenarios.
"This is not going to disturb pupils because we just asked for a room from that school and it will not do harm. Classes will go on normally," he elaborated.
