Tanzania: NBC to Expand Islamic Banking

NATIONAL Bank of Commerce (NBC) plans to expand products that it offers under its Islamic Banking to benefit more potential customers.

The bank started offering Islamic Banking services in May 2010 and it currently offers Islamic savings, Islamic current, Islamic business and Islamic corporate accounts, which are interest free and comply with Shari'ah laws.

NBC Managing Director Mizinga Melu, speaking at the second Iftar that the bank hosted for its customers in Zanzibar on Tuesday, said the products under Islamic banking were open to all customers regardless of their faith.

The Iftar sought to bring together bank officials and customers for fast breaking during the Holy month of Ramadhan. "We, in NBC, understand the significance of the Holy Month of Ramadhan as a key pillar in Islam and believe that there is no better time to sit with our customers to express our gratitude for your continued support than through Iftar," said Ms Melu, adding: "We always look for opportunities to work together with our Islamic Banking customers to identify our service gaps and improve."

Commenting on NBC's ongoing Hajj promotion, she said, "We strongly believe that the relevance of our organisation can be determined by how far we are willing to help people achieve their ambitions in the right way.

It's this strong belief that led the bank NBC, through its Islamic Banking section, to launch an annual Hajj campaign last year to help Islamic Banking customers to fulfill that important pillar in Islam.'
