The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Wednesday denied the statement credited to its National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, that the five northern governors calling for his sack are visionless.
The party's acting National Secretary, Dr. Charles Aderemi Akitoye, in a press release, said the statement containing the criticism, which was issued by Mr. Oliver Okpala, Special Assistant on Media to the party National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, did not represent the position of the party.
The five governors, Alhaji Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Dr. Mu'azu Babangida Aliyu (Niger). Dr. Musa Kwankwaso (Kano), Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto) and Alhaji Murtala Nyako (Adamawa). had last weekend during a meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan, demanded the removal of Tukur as one of the steps towards resolving the crisis in PDP.
Tukur, also in a statement signed by Ahmed Shuaibu-Gara Gombe, denied the statement by Okpala, saying he was infuriated particularly when he singled out the five governors, for criticism.
Tukur, who is currently in Saudi Arabia, said the statement was not only embarrassing but counterproductive.
"There is no way the chairman could have condemned the northern governors talk less of accusing them of overheating the polity as contained in the statement of the media assistant," he said in the statement.
Meanwhile, the three PDP members who recently withdrew their suit seeking to stop the party's special national convention, have defended their action, saying they went to court to strengthen the party.
The litigants, Bashir Maidugu, Yahaya Sule and Abba Yale, at a meeting with the National Reconciliation Committee of the party, headed by Bayelsa State Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson, in Abuja, explained that things had taken a dangerous turn in the party and they felt only the court could check the trend.
Maidugu, who spoke on behalf of the litigants, said it took four days of frank negotiations with the Dickson committee to "arrive at where we are."
"Having extracted firm commitments from the committee to right the wrongs in the party, we were left with no option than to withdraw our suit" he added.
Responding, Dickson thanked the litigants for "truly showing that they are good party men and patriotic Nigerians."
"This is the spirit we want to see in every member of our party, to subsume your personal interests in the generality because collective interest is more important than individual interest," he said.
