Ilorin — Registration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is a welcome development that would challenge the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to address its internal wrangling, a PDP elder in Kwara State has said.
Alhaji Salau Alabi Olorin however believes the merger of opposition parties cannot end the dominant role of the ruling party in the country.
Speaking with Daily Trust yesterday in reaction to the registration of APC, Olorin said the APC poses no threat to the ruling PDP.
The PDP elder, who was a Second Republic Senatorial candidate for Kwara Central under the defunct Nigeria Peoples Party (NPP), said the strength of PDP cannot be equalled by a merger of four opposition parties.
"However, the registration of APC would keep the PDP on its toe and goad it to resolve the lingering internal squabbles in the party", he said.
He urged the leadership of PDP to always thread the path of justice, fairness, equity and the rule of law in administering the party, noting that the current war between the party leadership and some state chapters was unhealthy for the party.
The PDP chieftain called on the party leadership at the national level to always defer to state governors as leaders of their respective state chapters to avoid causing crisis at the state level.
"I want to say that yes there are pockets of wrangling currently in the party but this is not enough ground for the opposition parties to boast of unseating the PDP. PDP has been in existence for over a long time with its structure in virtually all states of the federation. I want to believe other parties are still coming to join the party," he said.
