The government has given all boda boda operators in Garissa a one month ultimatum to register failure to which it will action will be taken against them.
Addressing hundreds of boda boda operators in Garissa town yesterday during his first meeting with them, the new Garissa base commandant Ramadhan Mjomba said the move would help in enhancing security in the town.
The traffic boss said that it was evident that that criminal were using them to escape after committing crimes and so the need to keep track of all of them to curb the insecurity.
"We have information that some criminals have taken advantage of the fact that you are not registered to commit crimes. As much as we understand that majority of you are good people, we understand that there are some of you who collude with criminals to cause all sorts of havoc," Mjomba said adding that the details of the motorbikes and the operators will help in weeding out criminals.
Mjomba said that the curfew that was imposed by the government in May allowing boda boda operators to only work until 6 pm was still in place saying that it had largely contributed to the decrease of insecurity incidences in the town.
He also said that police will soon start a crackdown on all motorcycles operating without driving licences and insurances. During the meeting, the boda boda operators lamented that they were being harassed by Administration police officers who demand bribes from them on a daily basis. Mjomba however assured them that an officer found to be extorting the operators will be dealt with.
