Nigeria: Court Remands Man for Raping a Minor

Osogbo — A 38-year-old man, Ramoni Sobalaje, has been remanded in the Ilesa prison by an Osogbo Magistrate Court for allegedly defiling a 15-year-old girl.

The police prosecutor, Sergeant Elisha Olusegun told the court that the accused person committed the offence on July 15, at Iree, a town in Boripe Local Government Area of Osun state.

Olusegun added that the accused unlawfully and forcefully had carnal knowledge of the minor without her consent.

He said the action of Sobalaje contravened Section 358 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. 11 Laws of Osun 2003 and section 31(2) of Child Right Law of Osun 2007.

While taking his plea, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read out to him and vehemently denied committing the act.

The Presiding Magistrate, Olusola Aluko ordered that accused be remanded in Ilesha prison custody till August 20 when the matter is expected to come up for hearing.

He also directed counsel to the accused, Mr Seye Oluyombo to file a formal bail application on behalf of his client.
