Mozambique: Tender for Cuamba - Lichinga Roadworks Launched in September

Maputo — The public tender to select the companies to carry out the upgrading of the road between Cuamba and Lichinga in the northern Mozambican province of Niassa will be launched in September.

According to the daily newspaper “Noticias”, the 320-kilometre road needs urgent repairs as it is rapidly degenerating.

The Minister of Public Works and Housing, Cadmiel Muthemba, stated that in the first phase a 70-kilometre stretch between Cuamba and Muita will be asphalted.

The other two road sections are between Muita and Massangulo, and between Massangulo and Lichinga.

The Minister explained that the roadworks will be completed in either 2015 or 2016. This is to ensure that the contractors have enough time to finish their work to the standards set in the contracts.

The total cost for the rehabilitation work is about two hundred million US dollars.

Upgrading the road represents a key step in connecting the provinces of Nampula and Niassa, as well as the hinterland of Zambia and Malawi.

The upgrading is part of the government's plan to improve the road network within the regional context of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
