South Sudan: Dr Benjamin Meets President Kenyatta, Delivers President Kiir's Message

press release

Nairobi — The special envoy of President of the Republic, Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin yesterday met Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta in Nairobi and delivered President Kiir's message to him.

According to Dr. Benjamin, the message was about the cooperation agreement, the concern of South Sudan on the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Central African Republic as well as the mega infrastructural project, LAPSET, creating a transport corridor linking the port of Lamu in Kenya to South Sudan.

Speaking after the meeting, the envoy said President Kenyatta promised to work hard to ensure the cooperation agreement and the matrix is implemented by Sudan. Dr. Benjamin also said the President of Kenya told him that the success of the cooperation agreement between Sudan and South Sudan is not only for the benefit of the Sudans alone but also for the region as a whole.

Kenya being one of the guarantors of the comprehensive peace agreement that brought independence to South Sudan, President Kenyatta said the country will work for the peace of South Sudan and Sudan since any instability in the two countries would threaten the regional security.

Dr Benjamin also reported that President Kenyatta pledged to invite President Salva Kiir to a meeting between the four countries involved in LAPSET which is likely to occur in August in Mombasa. He said the meeting will mostly focus on how to proceed with the LAPSET projects including the construction of pipelines, railway lines and airports between these countries. The four countries are Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda and the Republic of South Sudan.
