Nigeria: FG Insensitive to Varsity Education - ASUU

As the industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) enters the sixth week, the union has accused the federal government of being insensitive to the needs of university education.

The Kano zonal chapter of ASUU, comprising seven North West States of Katsina, Kano, Sokoto, Kebbi, Jigawa, Zamfara and Kaduna made this known, yesterday, and blamed government for incessant strike which is crippling university education in the country.

Addressing the press, ASUU Kano zonal coordinator, Dr Rabiu Nasiru, regretted that the government "blatantly and shamelessly refused to honour the MoU signed with ASUU" adding that the union could not watch the deplorable state of university education unchecked.

Nasiru said, "We have written over 200 letters to the government, sat with the government a record 51 times yet the government failed to honour all the agreements it voluntarily signed" insisting that "the strike is not about money or personal benefits as claimed by government or its charlatans."

Dr Nasiru said that "there is a 1:400 student teacher ratio instead of 1:40, classrooms in most universities could not accommodate students, in some universities, lectures are held under tree, and libraries stay up to two days without electricity.
