Kenya: Contractors Want More Funds for Bridge

Contractors in Isiolo yesterday asked the CDF committee to top up funds from the national government to ensure quality work towards construction of the killer Gotu bridge.

The contractors attending Isiolo County Contractors Association forum asked the committee to increase allocations for the bridge to Sh200 million.

Led by Hussein Gulled, the contractors said CDF alone cannot sufficiently fund the project.

Gulled asked the government to award the contract to an international company that will construct the bridge to the required standard.

The contractors said the bridge, that has caused the death of more than 40 people, should be relocated to reduce the cost of construction.

More than 10 people including four police officers were swept away by the Ewaso Nyiro river two years ago when the truck they were travelling rolled off the bridge.

The bodies of the victims and the firearms are yet to be recovered from the crocodile-infested river. The CDF committee was prompted to fund the project after the ministry delayed to disburse funds for the construction of the bridge last year.
