Zimbabwe: The Legend and His Comparable Wife

There is something very, very special and something very, very extraordinary about President Mugabe. As I watched him and the First Lady Amai Grace Mugabe enter the giant National Sports Stadium last Sunday to deafening cheers and the infectious "Gushungo, Gushungo," chants, it really dawned on me that we were watching a legend making history.

It's not every day and it's not everyone who will have the rare privilege of seeing history unfolding and actually walking through that history.

It really felt good and I did not waste time -- I took out my iPad and captured this historic moment. In future, when I talk about this historic moment I will have something visual to express myself. Several local and foreign journalists did the same.

Even the presidential spokesperson, Cde George Charamba, captured snippets of this moment on his iPad and of course, tomorrow when he writes his memoirs, he will have a long, deep and insightful story to tell because what was overwhelming most of us journalists last Sunday, is something that he frequently witnesses in the course of duty.

But let's pause for a moment. There is something that is usually overshadowed by this living legend. While President Mugabe is a legend living in our fortunate times, the First Lady Amai Grace Mugabe has indeed become the "comparable helper" that the Bible talks about. Genesis 2:18 says: "And The Lord God said; 'it is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him." A quick check in the dictionary shows that if something is said to be "comparable" it means it is worthy of comparison. Put simply, something comparable is something that is as good as that which it is being compared to. So the First Lady has become a comparable helper to the President and she has done it so effortlessly.

President Mugabe has been under a barrage of attacks from the imperialists and their sponsored media, attacking and demonising him has become a lucrative industry for the merchants of imperialism and if these merchants were to be believed, he has died many times. The President has been accused of staying in power for too long, mercenary reporters have written countless times that he is too old to continue ruling the country and his marriage to the First Lady has also not been spared in the senseless attacks.

Despite the relentless and sustained attacks, the First Lady has weathered the storm and the role that she played supporting her husband during the massive rallies across the country has won her many admirers and of course in the process many votes for the President.

The First Lady has really managed to present herself as The Mother of the Nation and the way she complemented the President clearly showed that she understands the arduous task at hand. Ephesians 5:22 talks about such wives:

"Wives, understand and support your husbands in ways that show your support for Christ."

Of course, the President has dodged several political bullets and the imperialists keep firing a salvo of bullets, but the man's defiance betrays his age. He fights back with serious tact and he fires back with deadly precision. It's like he is in his early 40s and the imperialists are running out of ammunition to attack him.

The man is 89 years, but when he took to the podium last Sunday, one could easily see that we were about to be taken on a rich and unforgettable ride -- pure archive material that future generations will use in their studies on the qualities of a good leader.

That the President is a great orator is now known by almost everyone and that during all the star rallies his addresses defied his age, was witnessed many but there was something magnetic about his address last Sunday. As usual, his authoritative voice boomed across the giant stadium and the tone behind his voice told the story of a man on a God-given mission.

His sharp memory, his ability to explain himself in simple terms even when dealing with complex issues and the way he explains the country's history in ways that keeps the listener glued clearly shows that he knows that he has not yet finished the God-given mission.

At 89 years, the President stood for almost two hours addressing an appreciative crowd that cheered when he hammered his points in his usual forceful and incisive way. There are very few people at the age of 89 who can stand on their feet for almost two hours and dish out a cohesive and coherent address in the manner in which the President did last Sunday.

It's like he has a way of defying nature because looking at him speaking from the podium, one could easily see that he was not putting pressure on himself and he was very much stable. How he does that and where he gets the energy, nobody can really explain. Maybe the best way is just to say "ndezvashe."

After that long and powerful address, as he was leaving the stadium President Mugabe once again showed journalists that he is a rare breed. While many thought that after such a long day, he would be tired and hoping to dash home, he agreed to answer a few questions from the hordes of journalists. As the journalists asked him questions, the President was still in a jovial mood and was very lively. When one journalist asked him whether he still had the energy to run the country for another five years if he wins the Wednesday elections, his response left many journalists in stitches of laughter but he had made a very strong point.

He responded to the question saying: "Yes (I still have the energy) and even to box you." He said it while showing the journalists his famous fist. We all laughed but that response was very loaded.

Many journalists shock their heads in admiration and disbelief as the President and the First Lady waved to the crowd while walking to their vehicle which was about 500 metres away.

He really made me feel very proud to be a Zimbabwean under his revolutionary leadership.

The President is a great charmer and the MDC-T organising secretary Mr Nelson Chamisa was really charmed by the man in one of the Cabinet meetings.

"When greatness shall be measured, the man in the chair (President Mugabe who chairs Cabinet) shall be one among a few. I am impressed by his wisdom and deftness in dealing with matters and affairs of the State. I wonder who among the aspirants possesses even a quarter of what he posses. He is a great man.

"A man of a golden mind -- agile and special in many ways. Meetings are different with him. It explains why I haven't attacked him for a long while. My bone is with Zanu-PF for now."

Chamisa wrote this note to a Zanu-PF colleague who was stunned by the boldness of the young MDC-T member. That's how infectious President Mugabe can be. Bishop Andrew Wutaunashe, the founder of the Family of God Churches, before his prayer for the rally at the stadium last Sunday, had spoken about President Mugabe giving the MDC leaders apprenticeship during the years in the inclusive Government.

In reference to the include Government he said: "This exercise was not a waste of time. I believe the Lod God, Almighty forced you into this situation so that you will be able to create a peaceful atmosphere of political competition which we now thankfully witness in the country. We thank you for this peace.

"Let me also observe that God also intended that by close association with those in the opposition, you would tutor your political partners in the fundamental values of the liberation struggle which you led and sacrificed many lives for. So it is my conviction, this politics apprenticeship which you gave even to those who opposed you was not a waste of time."

Indeed, in time to come, some MDC leaders will realize how much it was a privilege to work with President Mugabe and those bold enough will one day swallow their pride and write books praising and thanking the President for a time well spent in the inclusive Government. Speaking at the giant stadium last Sunday, the First Lady Amai Grace gave a clearer insight of how the President operates. She is the wife and so when she speaks about her husband, we better listen and take her serious because she knows better.

After the President had addressed the bumper crowd at the National Sports Stadium for about two hours, it was time for the First Lady to thank the President for the address and thank the crowd for coming out in such large numbers. As I watched from a distance I could see that the First Lady was raring to go. However, one of the waiters at the high table was clearly not following the flow of things and he went ahead and tried to serve the First Lady some drinks at that moment. "Chimbomira," I saw the First Lady saying.

From then on she was handed over the microphone and the way she delivered her speech was just a marvel to watch and clearly told the story of a wife who has been mentored by the best.

From then on she went on to deliver a very rich and dignified speech which showed that she indeed is a God-fearing mother and wife. "Tichiona hutungamiri hwavaMugabe, tinoona kuti izvi hazvisi zvega. Zvese zvavanotaura dzimwe nguva unonyatsoona kuti aahhh, haasisiri munhu ari kutaura, ispirit yamwari yatopinda mumunhu," the about 45 000 strong crowd cheered in total agreeement. The First Lady went on to recite Jeremiah 1:5 which says: "Before you were formed in your mother's womb I knew you. The verse goes on to say; "Before you were born, I sanctified you." In reciting these verses, the First Lady was illustrating the point that leaders are chosen by God.

"Hachizi chinhu chekuti munhu anongomuka angofunga achitaurirana newaagere naye kuti unofungawo here kuti ndinokwanisa kutonga, iye woti hongu wobva wati saka ini ndinozvikwanisa kana Mugabe achizvikwanisa. Hachizi chinhu chinongo kwanisika chete. Mwari anenge akatokuti iwe ndine basa newe.

"That's why vaMugabe vachiti ahhh, ndaifunga kuti ndichizorora asi ndakaona kuti vanhu havasati vava kunyatsonzwisisa kuti nyika inochengetedzwa sei. Ndimwari anokupai strength, ndimwari anokupai wisdom vaMugabe, ndimwari anoti yendererai mberi muchitonga nyika yenyu kusvika zvinhu zvanaka... " said the First Lady to cheers from the crowd.

She continued: "Vakawanda vanowisher kuti dai mafa but zvinofungwa nemunhu wenyama hazvisizvo zvakarongwa namwari. Zvakanyorwa mumapepa kakawanda kuti Mugabe arwara, Mugabe ari kufa.

"Ndizvo zvinotaura zvichiita murwere here izvozvi? Ahh, inga zvinotonyadzisa. Hamuone iyezvino vanyarara. VaMugabe is not someone who can say let's rig elections. VaMugabe is a man who fears God. A man who is honest and respectful. Handifungi kuti President vangada kuita President of this country through undemocratic means. Hazvifi zvakaitika."

She went on to speak against violence and tackled issues affecting the people of Harare like a veteran politician and in a motherly manner. Indeed as the Bible says, the First Lady has become a comparable helper to the President. Her maturity, her composure and the way she really connected with the crowd was just a marvel to watch.

We are never going to be lucky again to come across an accomplished revolutionary like President Mugabe in our lifetime. He is a rare breed that many will only read about in books and journals. This rare breed has found a comparable wife.

The unfortunate thing is that even after writing so much, one still feels that he has not yet even gone halfway to describe the President in full and to really explain how much of a comparable wife the First Lady has become to the President.
