South Africa: Strike At Walter Sisulu University Enters Its Second Week - Urgent Action Needed

press release

Today, the National Education Health and Allied Workers' Union (NEHAWU) supported strike by staff at the Walter Sisulu University enters its ninth day, with no clarity about when it will end or when lectures will resume.

All Walter Sisulu University campuses are affected by the strike action, which has resulted in the disruption of lectures and students being denied access to education.

Walter Sisulu University has been plagued with various challenges since its formation in 2005. In November 2011, the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande placed Walter Sisulu University under administration in an effort to fix the financial woes and governance issues the institution was facing. Over the years there have been protests from staff and students alike for issues pertaining to salary increases and exam results.

As the university is currently under administration, the DA calls upon Minister Nzimande to engage with both the staff, NEHAWU and all other role players to find a solution, which would enable students to resume their studies as per normal. I will also request that Minister Nzimande provide clarity on the progress the university has made since being placed under administration.

This situation cannot be allowed to deteriorate any further.

Students should not be denied access to education. We trust that the Minister, NEHAWU and staff at Walter Sisulu University will resolve this matter urgently.

Annelie Lotriet, Shadow Minister of Higher Education and Training
