BRAVE Warriors coach Ricardo Mannetti is confident that his team will give a much better performance when they take on Mozambique in the return leg of their Chan competition first round encounter in Windhoek on Saturday.
Namibia lost the first leg 3-0 in Maputo last weekend and will now have to score four goals if they wish to progress further in the competition. "I think we are better prepared now - we had a very good talk with the boys and they are very confident about their commitment. For me the important thing is I want to see commitment. I don't want to see a flashy style of play, and I don't want to see individual brilliance. International football is about the team tactic, that comes first and if you as an individual don't come to the party we will struggle," he said.
"We are very positive and confident that this time around the different individuals within the team will come to the party in terms of their commitment. If we have the commitment to play and compete then we can talk about scoring goals and winning the match, and after that about qualifying for the next round," he added.
Mannetti said that their preparations for last weekend's match in Maputo were not up to standard. "We had a specific plan and tactics on how we wanted to play the away game, but it didn't work at all because in my opinion we had a lot of distractions after the Cosafa match. We lost about five players from our starting lineup that had club obligations in South Africa and on the eve of the camp we also lost Sadney Urikhob and Pineas Jacob and I had to bring in a lot of reinforcements," he said.
"To make matters even more complicated, three players had to go for trial commitments to South Africa and they did not spend the whole week with us. They only joined us in Johannesburg two days prior to the game and that made it a little bit difficult for the entire team to gel as quickly as possible," he added.
Mannetti said the lack of commitment by the players was the main problem in their defeat in Maputo.
"The lack of commitment on the pitch was the main problem - the players did not come to the party in terms of putting in the effort to win balls, and in the one-on-one situations we were always second best, and because of that our tactics did not work. Mozambique always had the ball and we couldn't get the ball off them because we were not committed enough," he said. Mannetti said he used two strikers in Maputo, in Jerome Louis and Bradley Wermann, despite reports that only Louis was used as a striker.
"We went with two strikers. We have Bradley Wermann who plays as a striker, as well as Jerome Louis, and in our lineup we had a shadow striker in Neville Tjiueza. Even Mozambique played the same way we did, even at home. They had a top man and played with a second striker behind him and we used the same system. So it was more about how to execute it, and the execution from our side was not right," he said.
But Mannetti did not want to divulge much about his tactics for Saturday's match.
"I don't want to talk too much about my tactics on Saturday for obvious reasons. It's very important that we as a team know what the tactics are about and that we stick to it, but obviously it will be a different tactic to what we used in Mozambique. We will be more aggressive and more committed and that's what will matter for me at the end of the day," he said.
The Chan competition is only for home-based players with the result that Namibia's foreign-based players are not eligible, but Willy Stephanus and Denzil Haoseb, who both recently signed for Bloemfontein Celtic, but have not been cleared yet, will still be available for Saturday's match.
Larry Horaeb, who was on trial with Free State Stars is also in the squad, but strikers Edwin Korukuve of African Stars and Benson Shilongo of Tigers are not available. Korukuve has not recovered from a hamstring injury, while Shilongo, who is contracted to Blackburn Rovers in South Africa, is ineligible. Tickets for Saturday's match, which starts at 17h00 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium, are N$40 in advance at Computicket or Soccer House, or N$50 on match day at the stadium.
