Namibia Selects Team for World Championship

ATHLETICS Namibia yesterday announced that six-member team will represent the country at the 14th edition of the IAAF World Championships which start in Moscow, Russia on 10 August.

"A team of five female athletes and one male athlete accompanied by a team leader and coach will carry Namibia's hopes on their shoulders as they make their final preparations to compete against the world's best athletes," read a statement from AN.

2012 Olympians Helalia Johannes and Beata Naigambo qualified for the women's marathon while Tjipekapora Herunga qualified for the women's 400m event. Alina Armas and Nangula Ekandjo qualified for the marathon after meeting the qualification standards at the Mangyongdae Marathon and the Steinmetz Gaborone Marathon respectively.

Hitjivirue Kaanjuka completes the team as Namibia's best overall male athlete and will compete in the men's 200m sprint. Stay-C Namases will act as the team leader, while Tobias Hiskia will be the team coach.

Herunga represented Namibia along with 800m athlete Daniel Nghipandulwa at the previous IAAF World Championships in Daegu, Korea in 2011.
