SIX people were yesterday shot and wounded by a terror gang near Nairobi estate in Kisauni District. Two petrol bombs were also recovered metres away from the church, in Mlaleo area, in a different incident.
Three victims of the vicious attack at Nairobi estate are still admitted at Coast Provincial General Hospital with bullet wounds. Three others were treated and discharged.
The gang that was armed with rifles and crude weapons clashed with boda boda operators around 12.00pm as they attempted to attack revellers at a local pub.
"We heard a commotion at Sir John Club, few metress from the main road and dashed there. WE were suddenly-we were confronted by a group wielding rifles started shooting at us," said David Odhiambo a boda boda operator who escaped unhurt.
Meanwhile police are investigating an incident where two petrol bombs were found abandoned near a church in Kisauni. Kisauni police boss Julius Wanjohi however said the petrol bombs had not caused any harm and are with the police.
"Two bottles one filled with petrol and another containing a combination of chemicals were recovered near Angel Maria church in Kisauni. We have not yet established who left them there or the intention but we are investigating," said Wanjohi.
It is feared that the people behind the makeshift bombs were planing to launch an attach on the church. However Wanjohi dismissed the claims and assured residents that all was well.
"We cannot ignore or take anything to chance but I want to assure you that we are alert. We shall not condone any criminal activity," he said. He said the motive behind the attacks was mysterious because the perpetrators appeared to have aimlessly attacked innocent people with an agenda known only to them.
In the first incident, four motorbikes were also damaged during the confrontation as riders scampered for their safety. Wanjohi said the gang had planned to terrorise residents when they were confronted by the boda boda riders.
"We have launched investigation and manhunt of the gang and their motive. We are treating the incident as normal robbery," Wanjohi told the Star.
Wanjohi said police have not linked the group with other common outlawed groups and their affiliates blamed for past sporadic attacks adding that police have stepped up surveillance to locate the origin of the guns.
He said new measures will be deployed to address the spate of violence being witnessed in the area "We will ensure that all stakeholders are brought on board to boost the fight against the crime for restoration of normalcy," Wanjohi said.
