Kenya: Saviour Back?

Thika United tactician John Kamau has turned to the club's former goalkeeper, Joseph Rutto to resolve the goal-keeping conundrum that has dogged the club since the start of the season.

"Rutto is here to help us. He has volunteered to be training our goalkeepers once or twice per week as well as talking to them. Himself he learned his ropes here and it is an opportunity for him to give back to the team which made him what he is now," explained kamau.

Rutto, quit as first choice keeper at Mathare United last month after a proposed move to rejoin Thika was nipped in the bud. He later hang up his gloves to return to his former club as a mentor to young shot stoppers, Lucas Indeche and Adisa Zamu.

Kamau let go of second choice keeper, Joel Bataro to Gor Mahia and with regular Indeche losing his form, he was forced to play inexperienced former Bidco keeper Zamu in the 4-0 walloping at Western Stima last Sunday.

"I have no regrets for letting Bataro go but I must admit it was a good piece of business for Gor because they had two old keeper (Jerim and Mapunda) and now they have a younger understudy who can learn from them," he admitted.

"I think Bataro's presence here could not have made any difference because he is a young goalkeeper like Indeche and Zamu and I think he would not have offered us a different option. What we need is an experienced goalkeeper and they normally start to be at their peak--at the age of 26. As you are aware Bataro was an under-23 keeper," he remarked.

The Thika coach voiced his unwavering support for Indeche in the wake of his recent blunders that have led to disappointing results for the Brookisde-sponsored side-- forcing the club to axed him from the starting 11 in their last match.

"I want our goalkeepers to know they have my full support. I know Indeche is a superb keeper and he will come to his true form," said Kamau.

"Maybe the team has outgrown him but he is still our first choice goalkeeper and all he needs to do is to settle down and do things normally," he added.

Kamau was also quick to point out that the recent slump Thika are experiencing is an expected phenomena for any team in a grueling nine month campaign. Thika United have failed to win in their last six league matches and dropped from the summit of the Kenya Premier League table to second.

"We have 12 matches to go and one good result will change the course of our season. I also want say sorry to our dear fans all over the country for our recent results. But I urge them to give support to our team during the good and bad times," he said.

Thika's next league match will be against 2008 league champions Mathare United on Saturday at City Stadium and they have been boosted by the return to training of captain Dennis Odhiambo and midfielder Joseph Kuria.
