Kenya: Cherono Wins Gold in 10,000 Million in Bulgaria

Simon Cherono led a Kenyan 1-2-3 sweep in 10,000m in a world record time of 29:16.00 at the ongoing Deaflympic Games in Sofia, Bulgaria.

In the process, Cherono slashed the previous record of 30:24.87 set by Timo Karvonen of Finland at the 1981 Games in Cologne, Germany by over one minute.

Daniel Kiptum won silver in a time of 29:27.39, also inside the previous record time, as David Kipkogei took bronze in 30:54.80.

Cherono had earlier on Tuesday qualified for last night's 1,500m final in a second best time behind Alexander Bley of Germany with homeboy Andrey Gennadyevich settling for third.

Kenya placed 1-2 in the men's marathon on the first day of the competition and now has two gold medals, two silver and one bronze medal.

However, the same can't be said of the basketball team who lost all their Group 'A' matches to finish bottom of the log with just four points.

Others in the pool were United States, who topped the table with eight points, hosts Russia (7), Slovenia (6) and Australia (5).

The games started on July 24 with competitions in athletics, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, bowling, cycling, football, handball, judo, shooting, swimming, tennis, taekwondo, volleyball and wrestling. Kenyans are featuring in athletics and basketball only.
