WOMEN in Homa Bay have asked the county government to lower academic qualifications needed for formal employment to enable more job seekers get jobs.
Led by the executive director of the Women's Shadow Parliament Monica Amolo, the women expressed concern over the small number of women getting jobs.
They said most of the county's vacancies require applicants to have a minimum of Bachelor's Degree. Speaking at a function organised by Action Aid Amolo she said the requirement will lock out many women from jobs who have the experience needed but lack the academic qualifications.
that they were committed to ensuring that the number of women in various job opportunities in their Government was improved.
from employment opportunities many women who had a lot of experience would be locked out in many government jobs if the minimum academic qualifications are not reduced from the bachelor's degree to any post-secondary which the majority had.
"We are worried that this degree factor will prevent a number of women from serving our Government yet Homa Bay County has many women who have vast experience which can develop various sectors of economy," Amolo said.
"Experience is the overriding factor in performance of an officer but there are many women who will be barred from many job opportunities. The degree factor is going to deprive our County of people who significantly contribute the economy," said Judith Omogi who unsuccessfully contested Homa Bay town parliamentary seat.
Speaking during the same function that was organized by Action Aid in collaboration with the Women's Shadow Parliament,
Orata warned the women against waiting for jobs to be given to them and told them to apply for any job opportunity advertised in the area.
"There are certain job requirements that we cannot alter but we are going to ensure that many women are accorded job opportunities," Orata said.
