Kenya: Committee Asked to Save Land

Trans Nzoia Governor Patrick Khaemba has told the parliamentary committee on lands investigating the allocation of Chepchoina Settlement Scheme to reclaim land occupied by the rich in the scheme.

The committee led by Tharaka MP Alex Muiru is in Trans Nzoia to investigate the allocation.

Speaking in Kitale before the committee toured the 14,000-acre farm, Khaemba said some rich individuals from both Trans Nzoia and the neighbourhood were allocated hundreds of acres of land.

"We want the committee to audit and reclaim the land unlawfully occupied by the rich at the expense of the landless," said Khaemba.

The former Agricultural Development Corporation land was issued out by the government in 1994 and the allotment of the plots started in 1998.

Phase one and two are complete.
