The organisers of the Kenya Premier League fixtures have been advised to stop misusing the popularity of the two most supported clubs in the country-- Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards--to make money for other clubs. Last weekend, it was reported that Gor and Leopards --who hosted their matches at City stadium and Kasarani respectively had to share 25% of the gate collection with Tusker and KCB who played their matches at the respective venues as the two giants. At City Stadium, where Gor and Tusker were the home teams Sh1,297,500 was raised while at Kasarani, the AFC and KCB matches brought in Sh1,119,600. Former Gor chairman Fred Mwango said the clubs enjoying massive following across the country are being shortchanged by visiting clubs with smaller following. This is especially in cases of double headers, where the clubs with a huge fan base share collections with another club who host their match at same venue but command a handful of paying fans.
"It is unfair. Let us be logical in the sense that community clubs among them--Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards--who enjoy massive following around the country are not reaping fruits of their following when it comes to sharing gate collection. This mostly applies when we have double headers. Something must be done to give the two clubs better share," observed Mwango.
Alternatively, Mwango suggested the two top clubs should not be assigned double headers so that they enjoy their gate collection instead of sharing with their opponents who hardly command a big number of fans.
