Kenya: Supreme Court Adjourns Over Mutua Summons

The Supreme Court has adjourned to determine whether it has the mandate to hear proceedings in which Law Society of Kenya chairman Eric Mutua was summoned over remarks he made during the poll petition in March.

Mutua's defence team objected to the summons asking the Supreme court whether it could still question Mutua seeing as the presidential petition was heard and determined.

During the status conference of the poll petition on March 25, President of the Supreme Court of Kenya Dr Willy Mutunga, directed that the details of the case should not be discussed outside of the chambers.

Mutua however questioned the striking out of some evidence in the case while making an announcement that the LSK would form a team to audit the March 4 polls, and further cast doubt on the credibility of the announced outcome. Following Mutua's announcement, Mutunga said the LSK chairman would be summoned at a later date to explain his utterances.
