Kenya: New Port Rules Get Criticism

Traders and state officials at the Malaba border have criticised the government's plans to stop clearing goods at Malaba and Busia border. The government wants all cargo cleared at the Mombasa Port. Led by Paul Ibalai the players asked Busia government to impose heavy levies on goods on transit which will be cleared in Mombasa.

Kenya Revenue Authority has confirmed plans to bring some customs duty officials from Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan to Mombasa to hasten the process of clearing cargo in Mombasa. The new single customs territory which is a development under customs union of 2005 is set to start on August 1.
