Hundreds of school going kids yesterday began their long vacation with several sporting activities at the Youth and Sports Ministry as the Ministry formerly launched its inaugural Vacation Sports Program.
The kids will for the next one month be engaged in athletics activities including football, basketball, tennis, track and field and some academic works as they observed the vacation. The Vacation Sports Program according to the Youth and Sports Ministry is intended to have the students engage into meaningful initiatives as they observed this year's vacation from school.
Besides just the playing, the kids between the ages 10 to 19 are been taught lots of insightful lessons and sports skills.
Speaking at the former launched Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Jacqueline Capeheart said the initiative is part of government's plans to place focus on grassroot sports development in the country.
The Deputy Youth and Sports Minister said the program could create sporting interest in some of the kids who have not thought on participating in sporting activities just by participating in the one month events. Minister Capeheart challenged the participants to take the program seriously.
She added that Liberia could produce many talents from this program if the participants put their best into it. The Deputy Youth and Sports Minister said sports play a major part in the developmental stage of human beings, as such having little kids involved in sporting activities with others from diverse backgrounds is essential for the development of the kids.
For the one month period the kids who are selected from various schools in Montserrado County will lean some fundamentals about soccer, kickball, basketball, tennis and track and field.
Former Liberian International Football Star Kelvin Swebe and some other local sports greats are facilitating the program.
The almost four hundred students are been divided into various groups representing names of prominent individuals and carrying on the sporting actions.
Certificates will be dished out to deserving students as they will be competing for various prizes. Many of the students who spoke to Focus Sports commended the Youth and Sports Ministry for the program and promised to do their best.
They appealed to Government through the Youth Sports Ministry to continue the exercise every year.
