Women Support Women (WSW), a local charitable organization, over the weekend donated food, clothing, and school items to 'The Raining Season' (TRS) orphanage situated at 26D Spur Road, Derry Combe Drive in Freetown.
President of WSW, Kumba Brewah, said the organization is focusing on vulnerable children and women across Sierra Leone through advocacy, and that they believe every child has the capability to be mentally and socially fit to live a better life.
She assured that the organisation will continue to visit the orphanage regularly and provide them with the necessary support. Country Director of TRS, Quami Agbermodji, said the orphanage was established on September 11, 2009 by a United States family who visited the country and adopted kids through legal procedures. The family, he explained, thought it wise to do more for other children in the country and decided to establish an orphanage. Mr. Agbermodji added that TRS came into existence as a result of the fact that people hardly go out to fend food during the raining season. He described children as their resources, and that they will do their best to deliver them from suffering. "Our staff are working not for money but because they have passion for the job they are doing," he said.
Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Gender and Children's Affairs, Mustapha Bai Attila, noted that people should support children instead of chasing young girls for exploitation.
His ministry, he said, will work towards saving every child and give them the opportunity to excel in life. "We will continue to jail men that are in the habit of raping young girls with impunity," he assured.
