Uganda: Busitema University Appeals to MPs Over Sh3 Billion Debt

Busitema University administration has appealed to Parliament to intervene and increase their budget.

The Vice Chancellor Prof.J.N Okwakol on Thursday told MPs that the university owes its staff sh3b in gratuity.

He told MPs on the Parliamentary committee on education that of the required amount, only sh300m has been provided.

"At this rate it will take us ten years to settle this debt. We need your intervention," the University Secretary, John Wanjala said.

According to Wanjala, the staff was hired on contractual basis and is entitled to gratuity at a rate of 25 percent.

Okwakol said the low level of funding was constraining the university in its effort to produce quality and functionally competitive graduates.

Of the total required funding to the university amounting to sh43b, only sh15b was provided. The university has three other branches.
