Sierra Leone: Le30 Million Bail for Mother Who Assaulted Son

Magistrate Komba Kamanda of Court No. 2 yesterday granted a Le30 million bail plus sureties to one Theresa Semah, a mother of the accused, for wounding her son. The accused was arraigned on three counts of wounding with intent, contrary to the laws of Sierra Leone. According to the particulars of offence, the accused on Friday 7th June 2013, at 65 Upper Thunder Hill Road, Kissy, assaulted her son, David Abu, aged 12.

Magistrate Kamanda said he had an inclination to deny bail to the accused on the merit of the magnitude of the cruelty she had brought on the child, as a way to sending a strong message to women who are in the habit of waging revenge on innocent children whenever they have a misunderstanding with their husbands.

"I want to send her back to prison to suffer more, so she would not repeat what she did to the child she claims to be her son, because that is mere wickedness to the child," Magistrate Kamanda fumed.

"Let me make it clear to everybody that I will not compromise with such assault to a child. Anybody who comes before me with such crime will be dealt with very seriously," the magistrate further vowed, before adjourning the matter to 8th August, 2013.
