The delegation of the African Elders panel, which is currently visiting Egypt under an assignment from the African Union, on Wednesday 31/7/2013, visited ousted President Mohamed Morsi.
The meeting of the delegation, which is headed by Former President of Mali Alfa Omar Konare, lasted for one hour.
The former President of Botswana, the member of the delegation, said they called on the ousted President to ask his supporters to renounce violence, adding the delegation is seeking to reach peaceful solutions and this is the responsibility of all.
He said the delegation told Morsi that they should contribute to establishing peace and prohibiting violence, adding they support-launching dialogue with all parties to reach a peaceful solution.
On his part, Morsi said he cannot do anything as he has no contact with his supporters and has no access to media.
However, the delegation pressurized him to do his best to establish peace in the country. Morsi said he was overthrown from power and he feels injustice.
The Head of the delegation said the officials who met the delegation asserted that what took place on June 30 was a popular revolution rather than a military coup and that the intervention of the army was not aimed at taking over power but to prevent the outbreak of a civil war.
He said the decision suspending Egypt's activities in the African Union was not premeditated against Egypt but was taken in line with Lome Declaration 2000 with the aim of putting an end to coups and unconstitutional changes, which were rampant in the black continent for many decades. He said the last time the AU applied this declaration was against Central Africa, supported by Egypt.
