Nigeria: How FEC Rejected Pressure Over Gay Marriage - Turaki

The Honourable Minister of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs, Alhaji Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, has given an insight on how the Federal Executive Council (FEC) rejected foreign and international pressure to legalise gay marriage.

The Minister dropped the hint while hosting staff of his Ministries and his friends to breaking of Ramadan fast in his residence in Abuja on Wednesday.

Turaki who described Nigerians as highly religious society said the FEC could not accommodate such anti-religious practice in a country such like Nigeria.

He said, "the issue of gay marriage is very unnatural. How can we explain this to Nigerians? That a man will go and marry a man and a woman will go and marry a fellow woman.

He said such union will pave way for psychological and mental trauma to the children, whether adopted or not, will have to go through.

"For example when they go to school and they are asked; who are your parents? And they will have to answer that their mummy and daddy are both men or are both female. This does not fit into a highly religious society like ours", Turaki said.

He went further to say that "there is nowhere in the world where God is worshipped like in Nigeria. Even traditional worshippers also take their religion very seriously.

We pray a lot and that is why God has not forsaken Nigeria.

"We have been through situations that saw many countries went into pieces but whatever happens in Nigeria, like an elephant, Nigeria will only shake its body and move on", the Minister added.

Turaki said, "we may be starting this journey now but, I see this things out living all of us", in reference to the Ministry which was scrapped about three years ago but was brought back into existence in February this year.

I will try in all ways I can to give the Ministry a very good, honest and transparent leadership and responsible leadership."

He said " I may sometimes push you to achieve targets in the discharge of our duties. It is because I believe there is wisdom in our going and extra mile to discharge the mandate given to us not only by Mr. President but by all Nigerians. So, let us treat ourselves as members of the same family regardless our positions."
