Liberia: 'Wait and See' - Liberians Scrutinizing Government Fight Against Corruption

Monrovia - The government of Liberia on July 31 indicted Ellen Cockrum, Former Managing Director of the Liberia Airport Authority, Musa Bility LAA Board Chairman, and John B.S. Davies President LBDI amongst other for Economic sabotage, as the government's war on corruption begin to get steam many Liberians still do not believe this will yield any results

JENKINS NAGBE

"I think this is a very good starting point to indicted public official who are caught in corruption.

The idea of prosecuting people for corruption is serious but what is more serious is whether justice will prevail to the core. The government attempt to arrest and indict public official like John Davies, Musa Hassan Bility, Ellen Crokrum and the other guys is good step.

Honestly it is a good start but what we look for to see is that those indict be brought to justice and receive a fair trial.

When people are accuse let them have their day in court this is the beauty of democracy, if the government thinks they abuse public fund let them be given the opportunity to come before the court of competent jurisdiction.

If think people abuse let them be given their day in court you can jungle Justice them.

The problem has been speedy judicial proceeding but for now we can depend on the government."

ABRAHAM ALLISON

"Friendly, in my candid opinion, I don't think much has been done under Madam Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf regime to fight corruption. Since the inception of this government, corruption has been seriously permeating the corridor of this country.

In fact, the issue of Madam Sirleaf indicting a few government officials is not the first time.

In recent times, what happened to the boss of National Port Authority and the few others who were indicted for false asset declaration? Since then, the case has ceased to exist. We no longer hear about the Matilda Parker case and those who are involved in that saga, which likely means that they have gone with impunity.

To hear the government has come up to indict another group of people, we see that as a mirage.

The issue of continuously indicting people and letting them go with impunity is not the best way to fight corruption, however.

The most prudent way is whenever these people are caught, let them they face punitive action so as to deter other officials.

The President should refrain from having sympathy on certain groups of people who are involved in corruption.

People like Ellen Corkrum are in the President vested interest, so for this government to take any extradition seriously I doubt it."

ROLAND NYEMAH

"One could say it is a fight, but on the other end critical analysts will also see it as a lazy fight on the part of this government as the matter of fact this government is fighting corruption on the basis of selective justice and also it is cosmetic. There are people who have been caught in corruption web and these people are set free, only to tell us that the government has no evidence against those indicted for corruption.

When other people are caught in corruption webs, they are dragged to court.

For instance, since this government started prosecuting public officials, only Albert Bropleh has been sent to court and jail for corruption. What about the President brother Amblah Johnson who was involved in corruption? He was not dragged or taken to court for prosecution. Why should other people be carried to court when this fight against corruption is on one side?

America needs to send her back. The reason is very simple: Ellen Cockrum came to Liberia to work, only to find out that she violated the PPCC law and illegally transfered money abroad.

America needs to join us in the fight against corruption so as to not to allow people to steal our money and hide themselves in America."

MOMO TEAH THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR THE MOVEMENT FOR SOCIETAL CHANGE (MOST)

"I'm very disappointed about this government headed by Madam Sirleaf, who we trusted so much. All of her promises to fight corruption fail to be implemented.

In the President's 2006 Inaugural address, she told the Liberian people that corruption will be public enemy number one, however something is yet to be realized.

The only thing President Sirleaf has done is to expose corruption and corrupt officials to the Liberian people but she lacks the will power to prosecute corrupt government officials who are stealing our money and carrying it America.

When someone is related to Madam Sirleaf they will not be indicted for corruption, the president will tell them to resign and they will not be taken to court.

The only way corruption can stop is for Madam Sirleaf to resign and not to be indicting people all over the place.

All the people she [President Sirleaf]brought are corrupt and even the president is also corrupt.

For her to continuously be employing corrupt people, it means she is corrupt.

The Madam's close friends and relatives in this government can steal any money and nothing will be done about it,I can guarantee that.

All sectors of this government are corrupt and the President is not prepared, this indictment by the Justice Ministry is a mere joke. This government is only doing this to make fool out of us, just to say after the independence day oration the President is serious but let me tell you, after one week this issue of indictment will disappeared."

DANIEL SARGBAH

"I think this is a positive step on the part of this government to indict people who steal public money, but the implementation proceeding is where I have problem. I can recall that during the time of John Morlue, public officials were indicted we had about forty cases but there were no implementation of those cases that were establish by the GAC [General Auditing Commission].

The patronage clan network that is existing in our government, Madam Sirleaf needs to do away with it, most especially with lip service.

We can recall that an institution was established the LACC that we referred to as the toothless bull dog. The act of not prosecuting corrupt officials is becoming a very serious problem in our country.

The issue is for Madam Sirleaf to have the political will to prosecute corrupt officials.I do believe that the justice system is effective and the laws are on the book and only need to be implemented.

I do believe that this indictment is a warning to those who are bleeding the national coffer.

I think the US government is a civilized government who believed in the cry of the people. I know the US government will not sit and allow the Liberian coffer to be looted and those people use America as a safe haven. Liberia and America do have an extradition treaty; Ellen Cockrum will be extradited and prosecuted according to our laws."
