Liberia Legislature Mandates Leadership to Swiftly Intervene in Congotown Land Saga

Monrovia - The Plenary of the House of Representatives have mandated its leadership to quickly intervene into the ongoing land crisis in Congo Town between residents and Former Montserrado County Senator Grace Minor over a four acres of land.

Plenary took the decision as a result of a communication written by Representative Julius Berrian (CDC-District #10 Montserrado County) to plenary of the House of Representative asking the August body for its intervention into the matter.

Representative Berrian in his communication alleged that the ongoing exercise was only intended to get at one Eugene Freeman who is a Nigerian, but later turned into victimizing many other residents.

The land was said to have been bought by the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL) for an amount valued at seven hundred thousand United States dollars, but that claim has since been denied by the oil company.

After the reading of Berrian's Communication in plenary it was moved by one lawmaker that the issue be sent to committee room for prompt action but others argued that it be open for discussion, and the motion for discussion was accepted by many of the present lawmakers in Thursday session.

Said Berrian: "Colleagues of this August body, I ask the swift intervention of plenary into this matter. We have several people sleeping outdoor only because their homes are being demolished as a result of a court ruling. I do not intent to challenge the court ruling but we feel we can work something out to have the problem solve."

Contrary to the views of others who spoke in similar toneas Berrian, Representative Edwin Snowe called on plenary not to discuss the matter because according to him the issue is currently in court and any attempt to discuss it could jargonize it.

Representative Snowe's comments came across as unpleasing to some lawmakers who had another view and decided to respond to their colleague (Snowe) statement by reminding him of a similar issue in his district(District#6) between the Government and the ELWA management.

One of those lawmakers who could not hide her feelings about Snowe's comments was Representative Munah Pelham Youngblood (CDC-District 9 Montserrado County) who expressed serious disappointment in her colleague.

Said Youngblood: "Why now? Have you forgotten that similar issue took place in your district between the ELWA and the Government and it was discussed here despite it being in court or are we saying there are super lawmakers here? This issue must be, and will be discussed and a solution be found."

Pelham was also supported by Representative Larry Younquoi (APD-District#8 Nimba county) but for Younquoi he choose to introduce tribalism into the issue by saying that some lawmakers were playing cool shoulder on the matter because the place is refer to as Gio community and because it is Gio dominant they did not want to prioritize it.

Said Younquoi: "The issue with ELWA was not sent to committee room it was discussed because it was introduced by Snowe who is a so-called influential member of the House of representative. But now that it is Berrian and it involves Gio, they are calling for the communication to be sent to committee room. This is not fair these people are all Liberians."

Younquoi was later called to order by Deputy Speaker Hans Barchue, who presided over the discussion and cautioned his peers not to introduce Tribalism into the Discussion.

Said Barchue: "Let us not bring tribalism into this issue. This August body is the House of Representatives that represents the people of Liberia. These people who are been affected by this court ruling are all Liberians and that is our interest. It is better we find ways to address these people's plight and forget about tribal differences. This is not the place for that."

After several minutes of discussion, the power of presiding was turned over to Speaker Alex Tyler, who in his wisdom established a committee of six to intervene in the matter as of the date the communication was read.

Those on the committee include; the crafters of the communication: Julius Berrian, Marimu Fofana, Lofa County, Jeremiah Koung Nimba County, Gabriel Smith(Grand Bassa County), Edward Forh Montserrado County, famous for his "you eat I eat" statement and Clearance Massaquoi Lofa County.
