Liberia: Bong Loan Organization in Crisis

The former President of Tugbah Finance Association has resigned from the institution. Molley Tokpah, who is now an advisor at the institution, said he resigned based on dissatisfaction and disappointment over the way the institution is being run since 2011.

In his letter dated July 23 to TUFA Board Chairman Alfredson Takarweah, a copy of which is in the possession of our Bong County Correspondent, Mr. Tokpah said since the ascendancy of Mr. Taikarweah as Chairman of the board, his leadership has not written any comprehensive report to reflect financial and other activities of the organization, noting that he had requested the Management of TUFA to produce report on the amount it owed shareholders, amount customers owed, and a bank statement from 2012 to present, but his request has fallen on deaf ears.

He said despite his resignation from the institution, he was still interested in all of these reports to enable him settle his portion of liabilities owed the entity, reminding the TUFA board chairman that his administration left more assets than liabilities. Tugban Finance Association was the biggest loan lending institution in Bong County, providing loans to local businesses in the county.

Mr. Molley Tokpah, who contested the election in 2005 as senator tried contesting the 2011 election on the ticket of the Unity Party, but was defeated at the primary, while Augustus Flomo, a member of the loan organization, who contested on the ticket of the Liberty Party for the Bong County senatorial seat was not supported by his colleagues after his defeat at the primary.

The election had members and shareholders taking various political directions with a cross section of officials following Mr. Flomo, while others joined Mr. Tokpah.

Representative Prince Moye, also an executive of the institution before his election in 2011, has refused to make comments about the situation engulfing an institution that is at the brink of collapse.

Molley Tugban Finance Association, named as customer of the year by Ecobank-Liberia , has been dishing out millions of Liberian Dollars to local business owners in Bong County. Currently there are several public concerns as to why the institution's officials have refused to settle their political differences after the electoral process.
