Liberia: China Outlines Achievements in Liberia

The Charge d' Affairs at the Chinese Embassy in Liberia has outlined his country's achievements here 10 years after the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between both countries.

Speaking on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 in Monrovia at reception for the 86th anniversary of the Founding of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, Mr. YANG Jun said the past decade has witnessed a continuously enriched bilateral cooperation between China and Liberia, and hailed the Liberian Government's firm stance in upholding the One China Policy.

He said China in recent years has been active in assisting the Government and people of Liberia in their developmental endeavors. Mr. Jun said some of the projects completed by China include the Fendell Campus of the University of Liberia; the SKD Sports Stadium; the Jackson F. Doe Memorial Hospital in Tappita, Nimba County, the new Ministry of Health and Social Welfare building, the Agricultural Demonstration Center and 50 borehole wells, among others.

He said a new batch of projects are already underway, including the proposed government ministerial complex, two executive annexes for the Legislature, an extension of the Monrovia Vocational Training Center, and a comprehensive renovation of the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium, among others.

The Chinese Charge d' Affairs said besides infrastructural development, his government is also involved in building the human resource capacity of Liberia with over 70 government scholarships and around 200 training opportunities each year for Liberians to study in China.

He recalled that last month, the China Embassy in cooperation with the Liberia National Table Tennis Association held the second Chinese Ambassador Cup table tennis tournament.

According to him, bilateral trade volume between China and Liberia reached 3.6bn US dollars in 2012, ranking the 5th among West African countries, while increasing number of Chinese and Liberian entrepreneurs and business people are travelling between the two countries.

"We take Liberia's development priorities as our assistance priorities and aim at bringing tangible benefits to Liberian People", Mr. Jun stressed, and added: "China and Liberia are both developing countries with similar aspirations of achieving sustainable development. "

"As the Chinese people under the new leadership headed by President Xi Jinping are pursuing their 'Chinese Dream', the Liberian people led by President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf are dedicated to the cause of national peace, reconciliation and development and becoming a middle-income goal before 2030, which may I say, a Liberian dream."

"China, as a good friend of Liberia and in collaboration with other international partners, sincerely wishes to contribute to the process of making that dream come true."
