Ahead of this weekend's start of the Airtel Fuba League second round of matches, Felix Eupal analyses the major talking points from the first round that may shape the rest of the season.
Will Power live up to the promise?
After a blistering start to the season in which they won ten straight games, Power manager Phillip Kyomuhendo placed a bet of Shs 500,000 that his team would win the 2013 title. Power is clearly the team to beat but they came crushing down in a lopsided loss to Warriors two weeks ago.
But as the saying goes, 'playoffs are playoffs, anything goes.'
Oilers are title contenders:
When the City Oil sponsored side started recruiting prior to the start of the season, they just looked like a team ready to be party spoilers. However, five games down the road it was a different story. They upset Warriors and Galaxy Falcons. Previously underrated as alsorans, the debutants have the potential to stun anyone.
They kickoff the second round against UCU Canons, the university got the better share of them winning 52-47. Can they do it again? Top four up for grabs
What a nail-biting first round we have had. So far, six teams in Dmark Power, Warriors, UCU Canons, City Oilers, Galaxy Falcons and KIU Titans, all look like they can feature in the semis. This means there will be no easy rides in the quarter finals like the case was last season.
Obedi a curse in disguise for Ndejje Angels:
Ndejje Angels have a decent squad. A squad that can do wonders if properly exploited. They also boast of the regular season MVP Geoffrey Soro, three time league top scorer Steven Okias and 2007 Fuba league winner Francis Tumusiime.
Last season they made the playoffs for the first time, this season they have lost four games and walked away with major wins against UCU Canons and KIU Titans. However, their coach Walker Obedi is too volatile. Obedi and controversy are synonymous.
Angels had Warriors by the balls in the last game of the first round and Obedi went at it again, saying the umpire was against them. His team ended up getting unnecessary technical fouls, Warriors walked away victorious 60-53. If Angels are to get past the pretenders tag, Obedi has to put his head together.
Warriors comeback real:
At the start of the season hardly anyone could bet that Warriors would be able to defend their title. In fact the argument was that they would even fail to make the playoffs, the team looked derailed, there were very many new faces.
Two losses to City Oilers and Canons vindicated the fans arguments but a comeback after signing Riham Cola saw them beat Falcons, Power and Ndejje consecutively. Finally they look like a defending champion and set to represent the country in the Zone V Club Championship that starts this week in Bujumbura {Burundi}.
State-of-the-art Hoops the way to go:
Last year Lugogo management closed out Fuba arguing that the hoops were not good enough and were damaging the floor of the arena. The federation responded by saying they had bought "state-of-the-art" hoops which were on a plane. When the hoops finally got to the country, Uganda Revenue Authority impounded them because the federation had not cleared taxes worth Shs 36m.
The federation has been liaising with National Council of Sports all this long until three weeks ago when the hoops finally got released and placed in the arena. Now what is left is for Fuba to start plans of having their own home.
