Luanda — The Angolan Foreign minister, Georges Rebelo Chikoti, arrived Thursday in Luanda, back from Nairobi, Kenya, where he attended the 6th Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the International Conference on The Great Lakes Region (ICGLR).
Angola attended the Wednesday meeting of the ICGLR with a multi-sector delegation headed by minister Georges Chikoti, comprising the National Defence minister, Cândido Van-Dúnem.
The secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Manuel Augusto, and other senior officials also attended the event.
The Summit expressed its full support for the ongoing Kampala peace talks between the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the M23 rebel movement and appealed to the parties to hammer out an accord the earliest.
The heads of State and Government, or their representatives, reaffirmed their full support for the mandate of the intervention brigade, with a view to an end to the negative forces, in line with the ICGLR resolution and that of the United Nations Security Council.
DRC and Rwanda have been encouraged to continue with their bilateral discussions, in search of a mutual trust and cooperation.
The meeting also recommended Sudan and South Sudan to keep in place the understanding mechanisms, with a view to a bilateral and peaceful settlement of their differences.
The recommendations include the marshalling of resources for the management of regional development programmes and projects and promotion of cultural and sport events, aiming at the reinforcement of the relations among the peoples and strengthening of security, stability and development.
The ICGLR groups Angola, DR Congo, Congo, Central Africa Republic, Zambia, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda.
