South Africa: Cosatu NW Welcomes Court Judgment On Evicted Workers At Boshoek

The Congress of South Africa Trade Unions in North West has welcomed the Mmabatho High Court judgment in favour of farm-workers and farm-dwellers around Boshoek who were illegally evicted by Royal Bafokeng.

The first respondent was Royal Bafokeng and the second respondent was the Rustenburg Municipality. COSATU NW believes that the judgment is a lesson for those intransigence councils, who believe that human dignity and lives are nothing.

COSATU NW calls upon the Royal Bafokeng to respect the judgment and implement the order that the houses of all farm-workers and farm-dwellers should be rebuilt within three days, with running water and electricity connections.

COSATU NW argued that the demolition of the farm-workers' and farm dwellers' houses was uncalled as many have been staying in the area for ten, twenty, thirty or more years.

This order is a eye-opener for many municipalities to face the reality that the Land Act of 1913 has negative spill-overs in the democratic dispensation.
