South Africa: Cosatu Demands an End to Child Labour

The Congress of South African Trade union sends a message to the millions of child labourers here and across the globe whose childhoods have been, and continue to be, robbed by ruthless capitalists who milk and exploit the labour power of the working class regardless of age.

It is shocking that right in our backyard, a study found that a total of 121 000 children were engaged in market economic activities in 2010. Most of these children are employed in the taxi industry and the agricultural sector. Most of these underage workers are injured by the painstaking work that they are subject to or even worse, are killed and maimed; and their families never find justice.
