Namibia: Name Changes Stir Hornet's Nest

13 August 2013

Windhoek — The Head of the Department of Political and Administrative Studies at the University of Namibia (Unam), Phanuel Kaapama, says Namibians should understand that the Delimitation Commission was given specific responsibilities before they criticise the name and other changes that have now come into effect.

Those responsibilities are provided for in the Namibian constitution and were also formalised in the Electoral Act, according to him. "We cannot dispute the changes, however we can argue the substance of the changes," said Kaapama. He says the recommendations of the 4th Delimitation Commission are based on consultations during it was expected from every citizen to weigh in on the proposed changes or to offer proposals and the final recommendations, which were adopted, reflect the sentiments expressed during the consultative hearings.
