Cairo — Heavy gunfire has been observed at a mosque in Egypt's capital, Cairo, during a stand-off with barricaded Muslim Brotherhood supporters.
Shots have been exchanged between a gunman in the main minaret and security forces on the ground as shown on TV.
Dozens have refused to leave the al-Fath mosque, fearing for their safety.
But security forces have now evacuated the mosque and many of the protesters who had barricaded themselves inside have been arrested, they say.
The interim PM has proposed legally dissolving the Brotherhood, which is demanding the reinstatement of ousted President Mohammed Morsi.
The Brotherhood has called for daily demonstrations since a crackdown on its protest camps in Cairo on Wednesday, which left hundreds of people dead.
