Chairman of the Tonkolili district council, AlusineKamathor Sesay, has described transparency and accountability as major challenges within the district. He was speaking to councilors, section and town chiefs, teachers, youth leaders, women leaders and others in Magburaka last Monday during the opening ceremony of a three-day program to educate the citizens on the district's development.
"Transparency is a factor we need to consider if we want this district to develop," Mr. Sesay said.
He disclosed that training stakeholders was one of the aims of the council. He said that the development of the district should concern everyone.
A lack of understanding of the council's role by residents could undermine the work of the council, he said, adding that his leadership has mapped out a short-term, midterm and long-term projects to address urgent issues.
"This is a success because when once you are able to identify and map your responsibilities, that will help you achieve your aims," he said.
Chief Alimamy Abu Kamara of Kholifa chiefdom lauded the training programme. "I have learned a lot today from this discussion," chief Kamara said.
Councillor Alfred Ben Turay said that the district would make progress if every stakeholder grasped the message from the training.
