Gambia: Farmers Arrested After Clash With Herders in Sandu

Reports emanating from Sandu District of the Upper River Region speaks of a clash between some herdsmen and farmers on Tuesday 13th August at about half past 1pm, resulting to arrests of five farmers. According to the information, 10 herdsmen driving a herd of cattle on behalf of Mr. Njung Bah, the chief of Sandu district arrived at the outskirts of Jendeh village and entered into the farms destroying maize and other crops planted on both sides of the road. According to information, villagers became aware of the news that cattle were rummaging in their farms who instinctively rushed to rescue their crops and drove them away but met resistance from the herders who clashed with them leading to a light scuffle.

The brother of the village Alkalo of Jendeh, Mr. Mamadi Jatta, confirmed that a clash indeed took place but said no one was seriously injured. He said they have done their best to restrain those involved and eventually calm was restored. Asked to state what actually took place, Mr. Jatta said there were ten herdsmen said to be on an errand to drive 40 herds of cattle to Basse.
