Africa: AU Willing to Back Up Tunisia's Transition Process

Carthage — Caretaker President Moncef Marzouki conferred on Tuesday in Carthage, with an African Union (AU) delegation led by Special Envoy Pedro Verona Rodrigues Pires.

At the end of the meeting, Pires said he had conveyed to Marzouki the support of AU Chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to Tunisia's democratic transition.

He also pointed up that he is entrusted with establishing contacts with the authorities and the civil society to reiterate the Pan-African organisation's support toTunisiaand its full readiness to contribute to the success of its democratic process.

The AU envoy stressed the need to reach a consensus at this decisive stage of the transition process and be fully aware of the need to overcome the current political crisis.

The AU has faith in the ability of Tunisians to find a common ground so that tension abate, Pires underscored according to a Presidency press release.
