Following the decision of the Office of the President revoking the operational licenses of the forex bureaux leading to their closure, the customers who are in need of money transfer services and currency exchange are now experiencing difficulties as commercial banks are also not providing such services. Visiting the commercial banks in the vicinity of West Field in the Kanifing Municipality, this reporter found out that most of them were not providing money transfer transactions and foreign currency exchange.
At the Arab Gambian Islamic Bank (AGIB) on the Kombo Sillah Drive, the officials at the Exchange Section explained that the Bank is only engaged in bank to bank transfers but not financial services or moneygram to the individual customers. Visiting the ECO Bank at West Field, they are providing money transfer services which do not exceed a given amount and that it is only available between 8am to 9am.
A senior Bank official at the Standard Chartered Bank at West Field branch said they are not doing any exchange transaction and money transfer at the moment. The Trust Bank West Field branch had a long queue of customers who were told that there was transfer and money exchange services. Alagie Modou Ceesay, one of the customers standing on the queue at the Trust Bank West Field branch, complained about the long delay.
"I have been standing here for a long time waiting for my turn," he said.
