Kakamega county representatives have differed over the proposal to pay hefty perks to the retired and current government officials.
A section of the county legislators want former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, former speaker Kenneth Marende and Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka excluded from the payments. They said the trio are actively invloved in politics.
Majority of them wants the retirement package reduced so that it is sustainable. The representatives Grace Aluanga (Shianda-Marenyo) and Rocky Omwendo (Mumias North) said Raila and Kalonzo deserve hefty benefits 'because they have done a lot for the country'.
"Rail served diligently with the former President Mwai Kibaki. Kalonzo played important role as the Vice President in the coalition government," Aluanga said.
She however said the retirement packages should be affordable to the country. Ingotse-Matiha ward representative William Mukoko said the packages should only be awarded to state officers who voluntarily quit office.
"Raila and Kalonzo contested in the March 4 elections where they lost. They don't merit retirement benefits," Mukoko said. He said the two should have retired at the same time with Kibaki.
Mukoko said the two are still interested in participating as candidates in 2017 general election. "Marende also contested for speaker seat to the National Assembly and lost. He could be warming up to a bigger post in 2017. Can we say they retired?" he said.
Mukoko asked MPs to shoot down the motion that is sponsored by Suba MP John Mbadi "because it is very extravagant and not reasonable". He said if the Bill is passed, it will overburden taxpayers.
