Agriculture PS Cecily Kariuki has said the ministry is formulating a policy to curb illegal rice importation. Speaking during a tour to Kirinyaga county on Thursday, she said stopping rice importation will bring increase the local market for rice produced in the country.
Kariuki said market liberalisation has made rice farmers suffer lack of market for their produce."My visit is to ensure I understand the issues in rice farming and the problems farmers face," she said.
She said 61 per cent of rice consumed in the country comes from Mwea irrigation scheme and asked farmers to produce quality rice. "We have decided to come to the ground and engage with all stakeholders so as to understand the issues and come up with interventions," Kariuki said. She said the government, through donor support, has initiated a couple of programmes to support rice farming in the scheme.
