Sierra Leone: Waste Management Workers Threaten to Disrupt Saturday's Cleaning

Employees of the Freetown Waste Management Company are threatening to disrupt the national cleaning exercise this Saturday if their backlog salaries for three months are not paid. The workers are expected to play a pivotal role in the cleaning exercise slated for this weekend, but say they will boycott the event in protest of the non-payment of their salaries.

The national cleaning exercise is a multi-sectoral venture aimed at clearing the huge piles of garbage that have taken over some major streets in the city, especially during the rainy season. With the rains reclining this September, many Freetown residents would breathe a huge sigh of relief if the debris in most parts of the central business district is cleared.
